Our junior high students are remarkable. They come to school from homes that may contain multiple family members or multiple families. We have a large population of students who qualify as homeless or migrant. Our community is a suburban/farming community - homes and stores surrounded by fields and packing plants. Our students are challenged every day by poverty, hunger, uneducated yet hard working parents, and they still come to school anxious to learn - we have the second highest attendance rate in our district of 16 elementary schools and 4 junior high schools. Many of our students at the junior high level are tempted by the "easy way out" - gangs and drug violence are on the rise in our community. It is an increasingly difficult responsibility to provide them with reasons to come do the hard work of learning. Our school site currently provides access to Chromebooks, but on a rotating basis. I hope to build a classroom set of Chromebooks for consistent access to technology.
