My students are intelligent, often driven, individuals who have become so used to seeing reading as a task that they shy away from it unless it is required. Their writing styles and background knowledge reflect this lack of literary exposure. They have been exposed to so much "drill and kill" in their English classes that the concept of just reading something for the sheer joy of it is foreign to them. In the short time that we have done SSR, I have had multiple students express a newfound desire to read on their own. In a nation raising a generation of non-readers, this is vital to our future educational endeavors.
