My middle school students live and play in a neighborhood full of economic and social challenges. Our school is a safe haven for our kids. Most of my students come from backgrounds where college was not an option, but these families want more for their children. Middle school is that critical time when students begin to choose the academic road that will determine the options available to them in high school and beyond. This AVID class is structured to support students in their academic classes and teach them about college options and scholarships available to those who work hard and challenge themselves to take those advanced courses. These kids volunteer both in class and after school to help themselves and others with academic tasks and volunteer opportunities. I am so proud of these kids and what they can accomplish with the right guidance and support. It is a privilege to inspire students to be more than they themselves thought they could be.
