Independent reading will increase fluency and comprehension, and it will also help establish a community of empathetic learners in my classroom. Unfortunately, we are lacking in resources and do not have a school library. Building a sound classroom library will bring a sense of comfort and family to our classroom. It will also assist me with instilling a love for reading in each of my students. How many times have you been assigned a text that you couldn't connect with, appreciate, or even finish? Giving students free reign (within reason) to choose a book from their own library will encourage them to keep reading on their own... maybe even outside of school!
