My goal is to provide students with all the necessary tools for emotional and academic success.
Fostering independence is a crucial component of first grade. Our classroom is comprised of clear, consistent, age-appropriate routines that help our young minds grow and flourish. Sit spots are designed to show students exactly where their carpet spot is located. The pencil sharpener will be used by our classroom "Pencil Patrol" to sharpen pencils. This is part of our Leadership Roles, or classroom jobs.
Number racks help build number sense and provide students with a concrete tool to help help them visualize numbers to support their mathematical reasoning. The class set of number racks will be used by first grade mathematicians each week.
Every child deserves to feel safe no matter where they are. Occasionally, my students encounter stressors from school or home that push them away from their comfort zone. A tent is a safe place where they can go when they need time away to reflect.
Learning to regulate emotions is also an essential skill we are working on developing in first grade. Self regulation helps students manage their emotions so they can approach situations in a proactive manner. Glitter wands and liquid motion bubblers are wonderful sensory items that help students decompress when they are feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Fluorescent light filters will help create a more tranquil learning environment where students can engage with each other.
