I teach art to K-5 grades, along with a SMH class, Monday through Friday (around 400 students total with the largest class totaling at 28). To create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while also tying in visual art standards, for these special children, I created a rainbow theme in our classroom. When students walk in this art room, they are greeted with the same greeting each day; I say, "Hello, my most amazing artists!" and they respond with "Hello, my most amazing art teacher!" I then ask them "How are you today?" and they respond "Ready to create!" From there, we meet together in front of our interactive board. However, it is a cold, linoleum floor. It would really set the tone for them if we had a cozy, warm, inviting space for them to gather - such as a classroom rug. Right now their two spaces for them to sit in our art room are a cold floor OR a stationary stool that is connected to a cafeteria-style table. The rug I selected will have a soft, warm area for students to sit on, incorporates the colors of the rainbow and primary/second colors that I will be teaching and referencing to, and gives each student their own "space." Our students would enjoy gathering on their classroom carpet for virtual museum tours, learning about art history and famous artists, watching me model artistic techniques and making positive memories together!
