As adults, we often have the necessity of standing up and walking around during a meeting, so why should we expect 6-year-old students to remain seated in a hard uncomfortable desk. Flexible seating is an option to encourage my students to learn and love school. Every day they will come to school knowing that they can choose where to sit and how to receive new content.
When students are comfortable, they are more likely going to ENJOY class and be motivated to LEARN more. That is why I think is very important that my students have access to comfortable seating like bean bags, balance balls, inflatable chairs, or even a futon or a sofa where they can sit during independent practice. I also think that allowing my students to have access to a coffee table or a wooden bench will motivate them to write more since they are choosing where they want to be in order to produce better work.
Finally I would like to talk about how having a classroom carpet will help me as a teacher provide better whole group instruction. We will start our day by meeting on the class carpet. I will do whole group instruction and give directions of what we will do during the day. I will then let them choose their flexible seating of the day for independent practice and small groups.
As a teacher, I believe that flexible seating will not only benefit my students academically, but also socially and emotionally. I think that all students should have the option to decide how they want to receive their instruction. If we want students motivated and eager to learn, we need to let them discover all the different ways they can acquire new learning and at the same time have fun.
