It seems that people either love math or hate it. My students are no different. My 90 or so 6th grade math students come from varying backgrounds, interests, and skill levels. They are eager to learn, but sometimes find it difficult to relate to the math text book or word problem worksheets available in our curriculum. Even the students who favor math, grow weary of the math text structure. What excites my students? Stories : finding problems in the book and then helping characters solve them; imagining other problems; imagining other settings to apply these problem solving skills; imagining themselves in the stories. We are a rural, Title 1 school in a transient community. I have students coming and going all year long. They probably will not remember the text book we use for our lessons. Chances are great they will remember the stories we share to support each lesson.
