Sixth-grade math begins with students learning how to multiply and divide decimals and fractions. The students are expected to use these skills during the rest of the year, but these concepts are often difficult for students to grasp. My students can visualize fractions and decimals and connect them to real-world situations when they have physical materials to manipulate. I use fake money to discuss how decimals, percents, and fractions relate to while also connecting to the students' understanding of money. Decimal operation grids also help show how the value of decimals in a way that relates to percents. As for fractions, fraction multipliers help students see why their product is smaller when they multiply fractions. And a friendly game of multiplying fraction dice is a great way to liven up our classroom while practicing our skills.
