I am a Reading Specialist at a Title I elementary school in Kennewick, Washington. In the spring of 2015, 89% of our students qualified for free or reduced lunch, and more than 55% qualify as bilingual. Our student population includes refugees and immigrants from around the world. There are more than 20 home languages at our school. I work with struggling readers in grades K-5, and support teachers at these grade levels. Many of our students have limited access to books and technology in their homes. Some have parents with limited schooling. Our younger students and refugees of all ages often start school with little or no exposure to the types of activities that support reading readiness. Our school is unique because of our student population, but also because our school truly strives to be a community and partner with our families. Thank you for supporting our growing readers!
