Teaching first grade is so much more then just reading, writing, and math. It's also about teaching diversity, acceptance, empathy, kindness, and more. What better way to teach these topics then through read aloud's surrounded by characters that represent various races, genders, culture, and family structures. Followed by journaling their understanding of these topics and making connections. This collection of multicultural books will engage the students in diversity and inclusion topics. Books such as A Bike Like Sergio, Ada Twist Scientist, and I Love my Hair celebrate diversity and help students see themselves in the books I selected. The journals I selected will continue our discussion on diversity and inclusion topics through writing. The students will read thought-provoking text and then complete a different activity to connect the various topics to their own lives.
