My students are from a low socioeconomic area with a high percentage of students where English is not their primary language. Majority of my students are performing far below the first grade reading level. My students struggle daily with developing skills to better their reading skills. As first graders they must have mastered the basic skills such as letter recognition and sight words in order to help improve their reading skills. Many of my students come to me without these basic skills mastered which makes it very hard to achieve grade level from the beginning.
