My students need twenty exercise balls to get the wiggles out, stay alert, and stay awake. We will use them as chairs! My wish is to have a classroom which uses exercise balls as chairs for movement or flexibility in seating. Exercise balls will make it so that students will be alert and will provide students the chance to move. I believe that if students bodies are engaged, then their brains will be engaged as well. Increasing engagement is the key to active manipulation and participation in learning content by creating more alert students.
Recently I struggled with a student who was falling asleep in class and was not alert when she was awake. Once I gave her an exercise ball to sit on instead of a chair, she was a completely different student. She was no longer sleeping in class. She not only participated in class, but she was an active student in discussion. My goal is to put every student in one class on an exercise ball. The students will be able to move, stay awake, and engage in class.
