Flexible seating in a classroom offers a variety of benefits to students and will impact daily learning. It alters the physical space of a classroom to create a comfy, cozy, and safe learning environment that can help a student focus on what they are learning as opposed to focusing on trying to stay on task. Flexible seating will empower students by giving them the ability to have choice and control over their environment. Students choose where they work and with whom. They can move and change their locations and positions when needed. It is vital that children have the freedom and ability to move throughout their day. Flexible seating gives them that freedom and allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand. Studies show this increases oxygen flow to their brains and assists in strengthening their core muscles. It also keeps young minds more alert and focused to learn. Flexible seating in my kindergarten classrooms will give my students the choices they need to help them grow as lifelong learners. Students in the classroom can grow tired of sitting on the carpet or in a traditional chair throughout their long day in full-day kindergarten, but with flexible seating in my classroom that can be a huge game changer. Students will be able to wiggle while they work on wobble stools, read in a comfy corner of the room on the couch, lounge in a floor seat at a floor table, and take breaks on a small trampoline to get some energy out while working. Flexible seating will allow students the ability to collaborate easily, work in small groups, work in partners, or meet as a whole class for discussions enabling them to have eye contact with their peers.
