When I have my students rotate through their Daily 5 reading stations, every single one of them would choose Listen to Reading first if they could! My students LOVE to listen to a wide variety of books, from nursery rhymes to interesting non-fiction books. We currently have a listening center that only fits 3, since they have to use my personal teaching computer. My hope is to expand the number of devices so more students can enjoy this rotation. This listening center is crucial due to the fact that students are able to build on their vocabulary, and gain prosody and oral fluency as they make connections to what they hear and see throughout the text. Because my students are bilingual first graders, this age is critical to expose students to patterns, intonation, expressions, different accents & dialects, and the pronunciation of a language. This could easily be done by spending more time to listening to awesome, interesting books!
