Books are so important to my students and truly valued when they have the chance to get their hands on one they enjoy. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on my classroom library to check out contemporary, young adult books. As a first year teacher, the only books I have are gifted to me from veteran teachers. Most of these books are dated and used, leaving me with only about 14-15 high quality books I've purchased on my own. My students struggle to read and quickly become discouraged, especially if they are not interested in their books. As middle schoolers, my students are at that age where finding a book they enjoy can really make or break their reading experience. Not finding a high interest book can hinder their love for reading. I need to provide more accessible books with relatable characters and topics that will appeal to their interests. Many of my students read below grade level and need encouragement to read more and read often. I know my book list will achieve that engagement.
