Imagine you've just come off an airplane after a 7 hour flight. Your legs are stiff, your back hurts, you want nothing more than to move around. That's how many students feel about sitting in a traditional chair all day at school. I've noticed many of my students lose focus and engagement the longer they're stuck in a chair. While my lessons often include movement, there are times my students must be seated to fully understand the concept. After some research,I have decided to take back focus with flexible seating! With the introduction of flexible seating in my classroom, students will have the option to choose where they will learn best. One student may love their feet dangling from a stool, while another wants to sit on a pillow. Flexible seating is just another way for teachers to meet the needs of all their students. I have already begun the transition to flexible seating with different carpets and pillows in my classroom (a favorite spot in my room already). However, I would like more flexible seating options in my room. I will need wobble stools and yoga balls for students who love to move. Regular stools so students can sit at tables and bed raisers that will allow me to have a standing table. Flexible seating gives students a comfortable learning environment where they are in control. My second graders deserve that type of environment and I hope to provide it for them!
