Over the school year I find myself giving student's school supplies and making sure they have what the need to be successful. More than half of my students come from low‑income households, especially more so because I teach the AVID Elective which does have a focus on low-income students. Usually, I buy the school supplies throughout the year and out of my own pocket. This year I really wanted to be more prepared with supplies students most commonly ask me for. I am also asking for supplies students most commonly use in my classroom like tissues, paper towels, copy paper/ink, and even Expo Markers. We use Expo markers every Tuesday and Thursday when they have a group tutoring session with trained tutors. My juniors and seniors especially need things printed for college, projects, SAT/ACT, applying for scholarships, and etc.
From letting my students print to providing them with a pencil, I try to never let school supplies be an obstacle to any child who's trying to complete their work. I have seen how providing students with resources they may not have, has positively impacted their school work and confidence. I feel like they can trust me more and they have someone to ask for help even if it's for another class they may need school supplies for. Thank you for your help!
