I teach high school Geometry and Algebra 3-4 to students who have specific learning disabilities in math. Many of my students also have other behavioral and emotional needs. Specifically, every student in my classroom has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). My students' math goals include knowing how to perform math computations using a calculator. Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers, especially those with negatives, prove extremely difficult for my students to do in their heads. Many of my students cannot afford a calculator. At my school, 39% of students are low-income students, 3% are English Language Learners, and 7% are students with disabilities. Only 54% of students are "college-ready," earning a 21 or higher on the ACT. Over 50% of the students are minority students. Our school is a "school-of-need" both academically and financially.
