These books will allow my high ability fifth grade students to be challenged in their reading. My classroom revolves around challenge and high-level thinking, which requires keeping up-to-date with the newest literature. All of the books I have chosen have potential to win the 2019 Newbery Medal, one of the most prestigious honors in children's literature. We will be using these books to hold a Mock Newbery vote. With these books, my students will have the opportunity to read diverse, challenging literature and hold rich discussions about the theme, development of plot, and range of characters. They will then be able to hold a vote prior to the actual Newbery vote, comparing their choices to that of the committee. These books will challenge my advanced readers, pushing them to grow as readers and develop teamwork skills.
