My school is in a large urban district. Class sizes are at their maximum and supplies are few. Our students are excited about learning and absorb knowledge like little sponges. We discovered they loved learning about American History after introducing some primary sources relevant to our city. They kept asking for more information about local history as they made connections to historical information in our city. The enthusiasm grew and soon we had a grant for costumes and invitations to appear at local historical gatherings. The students look forward to their year in third grade as they know they will be immersed in colonial and Revolutionary War history by through activities designed to bring history to life. They choose favorite historical figures with whom they relate to and assume that identity through the year. Even the most reluctant students become true historians and will say that history is their favorite subject (though literacy skills were the focus).
