My students need to be challenged with higher level vocabulary and our outdated reading curriculum just isn't enough. Vocabulary is imperative for reading comprehension and giving them access to these new read alouds will offer a multitude of vocabulary opportunities for my young readers. The exposure to challenging vocabulary will help my "firsties" become more balanced readers. A book such as "Maddi's Fridge" not only provides the vocabulary we seek, but it addresses the important issue of childhood hunger. Being a Title I school, I have students that are faced with this issue in our local area. It also brings awareness to this issue for others. These stories along with the guided curriculum will allow my students hands on activities to go along with each story ranging from journal writing to art activities.
This selection of materials will facilitate language and literacy opportunities in my classroom and the funding of this project will give my students the chance to immerse themselves in literacy rich activities. A literacy rich environment emphasizes the importance of reading and writing activities in the classroom encouraging reflection and thought. I believe that this selection of reading materials will definitely be a benefit to my socioeconomically diverse classroom giving them the vocabulary they so desperately need.
