My students are all 3, 4 and 5 years old. The majority of them have multiple disabilities, ranging from speech delays, to blindness, to autism and cerebral palsy. They are amazing individuals, and they show me every day just how blessed I am to be able to be their teacher. Like CM, for instance, who I have had in my classroom for over a year now. She has Down Syndrome and is non-verbal. She has never spoken a word, not even babbling. Last week, for the first time, she said "hi". I cried! This week, she said it again (I didn't cry). She followed it up with "bye". Imagine waiting 4 years for your child to speak their first word. And then there is AGZ. He is 5 years old and also has Down Syndrome. When he came to me at the beginning of last year, he was non-verbal, did not eat by mouth and did not walk. He is now walking on his own, eating with assistance and has been heard saying "hi", "bye", "ball" and "out". I love my job!
