After the first few years of struggling with a traditional STEM curriculum, accomplishing this goal turned out to be easier than ABC! All I had to do was tap into my students' creativity; in other words, I put the A (for art) into STEM and made STEAM! And once that happened...I just sat back and watched them take off. The moment my students discover the creative applications of computer science, I find myself facilitating, rather than teaching, a classroom of fully-engaged students. So, for the past two years, I’ve explored creative ways to repeat this transformation. Last year, students decorated their own Spheros by dressing them in Solo cups, staging dance parties, and jousting with straws. This year, with the help of Makey Makey and Micro:bits, they will be making musical fruit, creating coded dream catchers, stylin' fitbit accessories, and more! There's an important reason why we should be getting elementary-aged students excited about coding. In our state, there is an acute shortage of computer scientists. According to studies cited by Code.org, there are currently 1,850 open computing jobs in New Mexico, and yet, back in 2017, only 169 students graduated in Computer Science, of which only 19% were girls! If I can excite my students about the creative possibilities of this field during their elementary years, then I believe that I'm helping to sow the seeds for a workforce that is well-prepared for the 21st century.
