I teach 1st grade at a public elementary school. The student population is approximately 530 (increased by 6% per year) and includes 73% English Language Learners, 15% with disabilities, and 88% socio-economically disadvantaged. I have 23 students in my classroom and over 80 % are on the free/reduced lunch program. Most of my students do not have access to a computer and/or use of the Internet at home. All of my students absolutely love using technology, often asking to read books and practice math facts on our one classroom computer. Our district recently adopted a new Common Core language arts program that has many online activities, assessments, and resources, however students do not have access to these on a daily basis because we cannot afford to increase the amount of technology in our classrooms. My students most often have 45 minutes per week of access to these online resources, when our computers and/or headphones are working properly (we have older technology).
