Our Title 1 preschool serves students considered to be in greatest need, or "at risk." The students in my class were enrolled based on needs identified during our screening process. These students are learning skills necessary to be successful in kindergarten and beyond. The carpet we currently use is designed for a class with about 1/3 fewer students. At this time, my students are sitting so close that sometimes it causes behavior problems. A new carpet would provide additional space for the class and assist in alleviating the behavior difficulties that stem from having to sit too close together. Title 1 programs are funded based on the percentage of students with low income. Schools must have a sufficiently high percentage of economically disadvantaged students. Title 1 regulations require school districts to provide services to all schools where at least 75% of students qualify for free or reduced price meals. Thus we also have a high poverty rate where I teach.
