As an ELA teacher with students of various abilities, I am always looking for content that reaches all of my students. I have found no better way to do that than with novel studies. The novel studies I have used thus far have provided real-life connections that my students take out into the world and use to make it a better place. Novels like Wonder and Fish in a Tree provide more than just lessons in reading. They are tools for teaching children kindness and acceptance while empowering them to believe in themselves even if their abilities may be different from the abilities of others. If I only provide my students with academic lessons and do nothing to teach the whole student, I have failed my children. Having these novels would allow me to teach academic standards while also educating my students on character.
