The fundamentals of academics require attention to early literacy. In my kindergarten class, I want my students to experience their learning through hands on activities that include exposure to books at a listening center, the responsibility of nurturing a flower and vegetable garden, and collaboration in problem solving with monthly STEM challenges. Such experiences could build scholars who are inquisitive, curious and confident in their learning as well as working with others. One great thing about listening to stories is that it opens up something new in young minds. One of the major items I requested for my classroom is a listening center. A listening center is a CD player with a book and book on CD, with 8 ear phones that connect to the player. Students in small groups can listen to a story at the same time, have a discussion about the story and react through an illustration and sentence. This daily practice during independent group time builds many skills needed to be successful scholars. Nurturing a garden and problem solving are hands on activities that require responsibility and problem solving, which are essential tools for school as well as life. That is why I have requested a few garden hand tools and seeds so that the kindergarten grade level can use to resurrect a garden, and journaling about the process. This hands-on science lesson and project is year long, and gives the students exposure and experience in plant science. The final classroom item selected was the STEM challenge kit that align to nursery rhymes. The problems in the stories offer challenges students solve by engineering a solution with materials given. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Math. This item will be used year long as well as during small group time.
