Did you know that many of our high school students are still reluctant readers? Do you want to know why? The answer is simple, yet complex. It's not that they are reluctant readers so much as they are reluctant to read books that don't interest them.
Providing a classroom library filled with diverse characters who are facing real time issues is key to providing even our most reluctant readers a chance at falling in love with a good book.
The titles I selected represent the diverse backgrounds of the students I serve. They represent the struggles of the families many of my students come from. They represent the struggles of friendship, the joy and heartbreak of love, and the journey towards becoming an adult. In short, the titles selected represent my students.
The classroom materials will provide my students to respond to literature in non-traditional ways such as through drawing. For many of my students, getting their thoughts out in writing is a struggle. Using creative ways to allow their ideas to be shared is just another way to keep them motivated.
