Our school is located in a suburban community with 41% of our student population qualifying for free and reduced lunch. My students are amazing second graders who come to school every day excited to learn. In my classroom, there are students at various levels which include students with Autism, ADHD, and behavior challenges. One thing is true for all of my students: they learn by being active learners who enjoy hands-on activities and working in small groups learning from each other. A state standard for our grade level in Technology and Engineering involves learning about simple machines. Most of my students will not grasp these concepts and skills by simply reading about simple machines in books. Learning about simple machines should be more than just reading about pulleys and levers from library books that have to be returned to the library. How exciting it would be to build our own simple machines?
