Games and puzzles that build letter knowledge and phonemic awareness are necessary for reading. Children of this age require time with manipulatives that they can utilize and engage with other students. Students learn best from each other. These games and puzzles are used daily during their centers, where they play with other students in their group and help each other out. Exposure to a variety of literature is vital to a child's reading knowledge, therefore a classroom library full of different genres of fictional and nonfictional texts would be beneficial to these children. They have a "Library" center that they spend time looking through books, observing the illustrations and search for words that they recognize. Towards the end of the year, they will be begin reading them. It's truly amazing to see!
