My students are in 9th grade in Alaska. My group of students includes some who are homeless and many who receive free and reduced lunch and whose parents are unreachable by phone, and fail to provide the necessary support at home for their children to be successful in school. Due to the lack of support at home, many of my students have experienced academic failure and believe that they are "not good at science." I have found that they respond well to hands-on, collaborative activities but have little funding to support them. I have an annual budget that does not even cover replacing old and broken items, and buy many lab supplies out of my own pocket.
