We have a classroom of 24 fourth graders. They are from diverse economic backgrounds. We begin every day with literacy activities and continue to structure other subject areas around that. I find that my students gravitate towards books on their free time. We use a Reader's Workshop model which gives them opportunities to choose books at their personal reading levels. I confer with each student several times throughout the school year to make sure that they are achieving their personal goals. They are very proud of themselves as they understand a concept that I am teaching and are able to apply it in their own reading/writing activities. Our classroom is a risk-taking environment and you will often hear students sharing their thoughts and personal reading/writing experiences throughout the day. As a teacher I am so excited to see them gain self confidence and would love to see that continue.
