The students in my second-grade classroom have been out of school for almost two years as a result of the pandemic. As a result, they are often unable to sit still in chairs for long periods of time. In an effort to "get their wiggles out" they will often get out of their seats or sit in an unsafe manner, which leads to distractions and injuries. Flexible seating allows for students to wiggle and move while seated safely at their tables. They provide the sensory input and chances to burn energy that young children need, which leads to less disruption and improved learning. A classroom full of flexible seating would make a huge difference for these kids who already have a long road of educational recovery ahead of them.
