Chromebooks in a foods class will allow students to get online and not only look up recipes and watch how-to videos for cooking, but will also facilitate project-based learning and research. I love to teach about proper nutrition while we learn basic cooking skills. I am only able to scratch the surface on the topic of nutrition and the students need to learn how and where to find information for themselves. Today's learners do so much on computers they have become a necessity in every classroom. Chromebooks are the most affordable way to bring the internet to individual students to unlock learning in ways that so nicely complement a hands-on foods lab classroom. I want my students to research the latest FDA guidelines for nutrition and apply them to their unique needs that will change as they grow. ChooseMyPLate is one of the sites that I would like to have my students visit regularly and be able to plug in their data and calculate a personalized healthy eating plan throughout their life. As we learn about career paths in the food industry, which are many and varied, it becomes necessary to research online so the students can find out about the careers that they might truly be interested in. Students can create a professional presentation or slideshow to present their research to others in the class which is a workplace skill that many students will need to have at the ready when they leave school. I would love a whole classroom set of Chromebooks that I would share with another teacher on lab days when we are not actively using them, but I will gratefully take what I can get and share when I can so the students can win!
