The students in my class have many challenges that affect their learning. Over half of our class have ADHD or ASD. It is difficult for them to focus and learn. We expect students to sit and focus for 45 minutes at a time, but students with ADHD and ASD get easily distracted and need supports to help them learn. They have not learned basic phonics and fluency skills because of their difficulty concentrating. This leads to problems with comprehension. Since they are struggling with each, they forget what they have read in the beginning of a text. The headphones with microphones would enable students who are not strong readers to use text to speech to develop comprehension skills and speech to text which would help students with poor spelling or writing anxiety to write. Third grade standards require students to answer complex questions about text and refer back to text to support their answer. It is important for them to develop comprehension skills in addition to working on basic foundational skills or they will fall further and further behind. They are also required to demonstrate higher thinking skills in their writing by using details to support their answers. The floor desks provide flexible seating which allow students to move around without bothering other students. Giving students the option to sit on the floor or use standing desks gives students the opportunity to work to the best of their abilities. For students with ADHD, the ability to move around is the difference between being engaged in learning or being frustrated by traditional behavioral expectations.
