This year my 6th graders work at table in our Individuals and Societies (social studies) classroom. Students will be analyzing primary and secondary sources regarding Apartheid in South Africa and its impact of the people today. They will encounter photographs, song lyrics, political cartoons, protest poster, graphs and maps with data, and political propaganda. They must work in teams to compile research about the time period in South African history and create an assessment of the progress the country has made since the abolishing of the government policy. If I can create a 'Hub of Resources" at each learning station, students will be able to focus on each individual learning task while having all resources and materials at their fingertips! They will annotate texts using the writing tools they most often lack, create and compare notes using the provided visual resources, and make judgments about the decisions made by people throughout the country's history. The supplies in my project help facilitate learning by providing all of the physical tools my students often lack. Each station/table can be equipped with all the supplies and resources students need to complete inquiry-based learning activities. The rolling cart will allow specific resources to travel around the room to student groups as needed. I see these tools aiding students immediately as they work on building literacy, research, and writing skills during our study of South African Apartheid.
