I am working on being intentional about using research-based practicing in my classroom. One of the practices that I would like to institute in my class is flexible seating. Some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating are using up excess energy, burning calories, better posture, and creating better blood flow to the brain. Physical activity is directly linked to more effective learning and better focus. This is supported by Matthew T. Mahar, et al who finds that "Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially."
The supplies I put on my list would help my students by allowing to use energy while still sitting and focusing. We need a bean bag chair, balance balls and yoga mats. These supplies would help my students who have trouble sitting in chairs for various reasons by allowing them to be creative about where they sit. This would let them be comfortable and focus more on instruction.
