As we begin a nonfiction unit of study I want to support my student's learning with high interest reading material and hands on science activities. My students need books that stimulate their curiosity and help them pursue their passions. I use my own interest in rocks and minerals and exploration of the physical world as a model for how you can further pursue your interest through reading books on the topic. What's the difference between a rock and a mineral? Igneous, magneous, sedentary are all just big words for my students until they can actually feel, taste (well hopefully not taste), smell, scratch and look under a magnifying glass at these specimens. Science allows kids to become immersed in their learning and further their understanding and curiosity about the world. Second graders are eager scientist because they are curious about their world and eager to pursue their interest. Using actual specimens to further our topic of discussion will be the ultimate way to extend our reading lessons. Ultimately, I want their learning to go full circle outside of the classroom, to their community and back.
