My students spend hours of their day confined in desks that are often uncomfortable and cramped. Studies show that inactivity and discomfort impede student learning. Allowing students to choose their seating, to be active in their seat, and to be comfortable in their seat increases their contribution and productivity throughout the duration of the class. Seating such as comfy chairs, balance balls, and seats with bungee cords provide students with an active outlet. Students that are provided choices and are provided opportunities for movement are often more comfortable in the classroom. When students are comfortable, they are more willing to take risks and to exercise grit. Thus, their confidence will grow. Flexible seating will also make students feel respected and empowered in the classroom.
