My school is in a city school system in a small Southern town. We are over 50% free/reduced lunch, and there are over 900 students in the school (6-8), 110 students on my team alone, with my English Language Arts class sizes pushing 30. I have a classroom with a spectrum of personalities, from the brainiacs to the creatives, from the undermotivated to the overachievers. Like any school, we have athletes and musicians and loners. And while many of them do not have much in common, they do have this: they are my students, and I want to prepare them for the future. There is a need to learn how to learn--not just book knowledge or technology, but life skills as well: collaboration, cooperation, and compromise. Practice prepares. My school administration is very supportive of the move toward hands-on demonstrations of learning, and because of this, I am motivated to stretch myself in that direction while allowing my students the creative freedom to explore the possibilities.
