Traditionally math has been about worksheets and direct instruction lessons. This puts the teacher at the front of the room talking while the students listen and complete worksheets. With these new math games, once per week our math instruction will be learning and playing games that support the math concepts we have been working on in first grade. I believe these materials will make a difference in the learning that happens within the classroom. Games will allow students to practice computation, patterning, sequencing, and logical reasoning in a way that makes it feel more like playing and less like working. Also, the students will help one another within the games, allowing the students to practice teaching the skills they have mastered. I want to create a math environment that is fun and playful. I want students to work together to play games that have math as a base, while I pull small groups of children to provide a lesson that is just right for their learning continuum.
