Getting struggling or uninterested readers to pick up a book and read it all the way through can be challenging. My students commit to independently read a number of books each quarter, and having a good selection in my classroom library is key. My classroom serves a wide range of students in both 6th and 7th grades. They represent a variety of achievement levels and include students above grade level, at grade level, Special Education students, and a large number of English Language Learners. My students also come from a variety of backgrounds ranging from rural environments to more urban and suburban lifestyles. Each student brings a unique perspective to my room, and each student wants to learn and be successful; they just need the right tools. Our school is a public middle school that is about 40% free and reduced lunch. Our budgets have been slashed in recent years, meaning there is no money for classroom budgets or resources to keep my library up to date.
