I am in a rural, Title 1 school, where a significant percentage of the student population qualifies for free lunch due to low family incomes. Families rely on instruction their children receive at school to prepare them for the future, as they have limited funds to access private therapies students desperately need. I support students with disabilities in and outside of the regular education classroom, across grade levels K-5. I invest a great deal of my own money into my classroom. However, this money goes toward basic classroom supplies, and rewards and incentives. I cannot afford specific sensory, technology, social, and adapted instructional materials that research supports for students with disabilities. My students experience difficulty with communication, social awareness, academics, life skills, and behavior. Daily instruction focuses on all these areas with any resources I have available.
