Young children learn language when they can connect it to their prior knowledge and use it in a variety of ways. In my classroom I have 60% of children with special needs and 85% of students who are English Language Learners. A listening center (along with great storybooks on CD) will give my students visual as well as auditory representation of the words they are learning. My students love to play with language through music, listening to stories, acting out their favorite rhyme, song and stories and during play. I notice that the students who play games, listen to songs and stories on the computer have been able to acquire more language. A listening center will be another tool to help students who do not have computer skills and will help my students with book handling skills.
