The Lending Library will provide children with books and literacy activities to borrow from the classroom. It will provide families who are unable to afford books, an opportunity to engage in reading with their child at home. The books will be provided in the primary language spoken by the family. This project will help children understand stories, expose them to new vocabulary, show them that printed words in a story convey a meaning and encourage conversation.
We need books, story props and portable CD players to help develop and encourage their language and literacy skills at home. By donating to our project, you will be able to help us spread the joy of reading in children's homes.
The items that will be needed for our classroom lending library are: books in a variety of languages, story pieces, CDs to go along with the books and portable CD players. The books with the CDs will provide a way for children to listen to books independently. The children will take a bag home weekly from the lending library. The bag will include a book, a book with a CD, a book with story pieces or a mixture of book, CD and story pieces. As soon as the children return their lending library bag to school, they may choose another one to bring home.
