My 1st graders are eager learners and always want to know why things happen. My students attend a Title 1 school in TN. Many come from a low socioeconomic background and there are a growing number of English language learners at our school. The students come to class wanting to learn and grasp all the knowledge they possibly can because it is one of the few places for them to discuss what there is out there in the community and in the world. Hands on experience are very important in the learning stage because it provides independent work and is creative to a child’s mind. The earlier we start in giving students materials to work independently and creatively the better they will become in thinking for themselves especially coming from a home life that does not provide much technology relating to education.
