The special education students in my room have been subjected to repeated failures and have suffered low self-esteem. They communicate their frustration through behaviors in the form of acting out, isolation, or learned helplessness. I offer them a place to be successful and proud of their accomplishments. The materials I've requested will assist them in learning to self-soothe when they're angry, sad, or frustrated. It will be a quiet place of security, comfort, and calm in their chaotic moments- a way to prevent acting out behaviors before they occur. Adding egg/pumpkin chair swings and training students how to use them as tools to self-regulate could assist them in remaining in class rather than shutting down and missing instruction.
