Science is not linear and neither should be the instruction. So many times I want to gather my students in a small group, as opposed to their lab benches to have a discussion or to pass something around for them to observe. I use plickers often and having the kids close to the board is really important as well. Sometimes kids get lost in the "linear-ness" of the actual science classroom environment. Having a rug, that is cleaned every day with a vacuum, will support the words my students continually hear me say when I tell them that science is not always so structured and encased in nice neat little rows.
