This year in Language Arts 8, we jumped into the grand experiment of flexible seating. Last year, I was intrigued by the idea that students would be more invested in learning if they were comfortable; meaning, that they weren't forced to sit in the same position, in the same type of chair, for up to 6 hours of their day. When I am reading or working on a complex task, I need to be comfortable and flexible; why wouldn't I assume that my students have the same need? My students have had the opportunity this year to pick a seating type that helps them learn best. For some, that means the gentle bouncing of yoga ball to dissipate their energy as they complete an assignment. For others, it means needing to stretch out on a bean bag to cozy into their reading. Many of the bean bags and yoga balls I acquired for my classroom this year were discount store purchases or kind donations. They have worn out quickly as they came to us already well-loved. Help our class enjoy reading, complete projects such as Genius Hour, and listen intently to each other's fantastic ideas all while being comfortable! We need bean bag chairs, dorm chairs, and balance ball chairs to give students some options.
